Kerala

Kerala is where the backwaters breathe calm and hills cradle clouds. From lush tea gardens to serene houseboats, it’s a land that feels like nature’s lullaby. Whether you drift through Alleppey’s still waters or trek Munnar’s green slopes, Kerala invites you to pause, heal, and simply be.

Some Important Facts

🌐 Local Language

Malayalam is the state language, but most people understand English and Hindi, especially in cities and tourist destinations like Kochi, Munnar, and Alleppey.

💸 Payments

Digital payments are widely accepted, even in smaller towns. However, carrying some cash is useful for village shops, boat rides, or homestays in remote areas.

🚖 Getting Around

Local buses, autos, and ferries are convenient for short distances. For intercity travel, use state buses or trains. Hiring a cab is best for sightseeing across hill stations or backwaters.

🕐 Timings

Shops and restaurants usually open by 9 AM and close by 9–10 PM. Start day trips early to make the most of cooler mornings and avoid midday heat in coastal areas.

👮 Safety

Kerala is one of India’s safest and most tourist-friendly states. Exercise normal caution, especially on winding hill roads or isolated beaches at night.

Climate

Summer (March – June)

  • Warm and humid, with temperatures around 30–35 °C.

  • Light cottons are ideal; keep sunscreen and a cap handy.

  • Plan backwater cruises or hill escapes to Munnar during afternoons.

Monsoon (July – September)

  • Heavy rains rejuvenate the hills and backwaters.

  • Humidity stays high but the scenery turns lush and serene.

  • Carry rain gear and enjoy Ayurvedic retreats or houseboat stays.

Winter (October – February)

  • Pleasant and mild, averaging 22–30 °C.

  • Perfect for beach walks, wildlife safaris, and cultural festivals.

  • The best season to explore Kerala’s coasts, hills, and backwaters.

Tips and Tricks

Clothing

Kerala stays warm and humid most of the year, so light cottons and loose clothes are ideal. Carry sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. During monsoons, a raincoat or umbrella is a must. In hill stations like Munnar or Wayanad, pack a light sweater for cooler nights.

Sightseeing

Start early for backwater cruises in Alleppey or visits to tea estates in Munnar. Temples and beaches are best explored before noon or near sunset. Try local art shows like Kathakali or visit spice markets for an authentic Kerala experience.

Transport

Autos and local buses connect most towns. For long routes, hire a cab or use trains. Ferries and houseboats are great ways to explore the backwaters. In hilly areas, check road conditions during heavy rains before travelling.

Food

Enjoy Kerala’s signature dishes — appam with stew, puttu-kadala curry, and banana chips. Seafood is excellent along the coast, while vegetarian meals are served on banana leaves inland. Choose clean eateries and drink only bottled or filtered water.

Safety

Kerala is among India’s safest states. Still, avoid swimming at isolated beaches and follow lifeguard flags. During monsoon, avoid treks or water activities in flood-prone areas.

Photography

Capture sunrise at Alleppey backwaters, misty hills in Munnar, and Chinese fishing nets in Kochi. People are friendly but always ask before taking portraits. Early mornings and golden hours bring Kerala’s natural beauty alive.
